From Runoff to Recreation: Revitalizing MacArthur Park Lake
Beneath the streets of Los Angeles, stormwater once flowed straight to the ocean. Now, it’s helping bring MacArthur Park back to life.
The MacArthur Lake Stormwater Capture Project, a partnership between the Los Angeles Department of Public Works, Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, and Los Angeles Sanitation & Environment, is part of the Safe Clean Water Program. The project captures and treats stormwater from surrounding neighborhoods, using that water to help maintain MacArthur Park Lake, reduce the use of drinking water, and keep polluted runoff out of the ocean.
It’s also bringing back a long-missed community favorite, the lake’s pedal boats, while adding new trees and shaded spaces to create a park Angelenos can enjoy for years to come.
